Waymo SWE interview process
See how Waymo runs its software engineer loop, from the coding phone screen to the machine-learning and system-design rounds that decide most outcomes. Then drill the real questions candidates report, so the autonomy-scale problems in the room feel familiar rather than foreign.
- Recruiter screen
- Coding phone screen
- Onsite coding
- ML & system design
- Behavioral & team match
Waymo interview questions
- Count Super Streaks From Event Logs (with optional user_id follow-up)

Waymo interview strategy
Loop Structure & Timeline
Waymo's process is unusually manager-driven: there's no hiring-committee arbitration, so your interviewers' written feedback maps almost directly to the outcome. That means every round is a real gate, and the recruiter's topic hints are only rough signals - loops shift, formats swap, and generic prep gets punished. Prepare for the loop as it actually runs, not as it's previewed.
A typical Waymo loop runs:
- Recruiter call - process intro, why-Waymo, and a light project walk. Recruiters reliably preview the loop format (for example, 'mid-hard LeetCode' or 'ML coding on the materials we sent'), but the preview is often inaccurate in practice. Prepare beyond what's flagged.
- Phone screen - a single 45-minute technical, almost always coding. Standard problems are classic algorithms (Dijkstra, BFS on grids, trie autocomplete, decode-string variants, interval coverage), but a notable share of screens swap the LC-style problem for an open-ended, autonomy-framed prompt (parse a CSV for downstream consumers, an OO scheduler for picking up passengers, or simulating a pen-on-paper drawing machine). Treat the recruiter's topic hint as a soft signal, not a contract.
- Virtual onsite - typically 4 rounds, sometimes split across two days. The standard mix is 2 coding + 1 system design + 1 BQ / HM, but candidates routinely report 2 coding + 2 system design, or coding + system design + data fluency + BQ. For senior / staff loops a project deep-dive replaces one of the BQ slots.
- Add-on round - feedback is mixed often enough that a 5th round (extra data fluency or extra coding) is common before a decision.
- Decision and team match - strong signals from add-on rounds typically land within a week; full silence past 7-10 days is usually a soft reject.
End-to-end, expect most timelines from first recruiter contact to decision to run 4-8 weeks. Compared to Google's pipeline, Waymo skips hiring-committee-style arbitration and the manager has a much larger direct vote, so interviewer feedback maps almost directly to the outcome.
Non-technical HM-first variant. Some direct-apply pipelines (for example, SWE - Labeling Infrastructure) put a non-technical hiring-manager round first, before any coding. It runs about 45 minutes as a career-profile walk-through: intro, tech stack, and the projects you've owned and delivered.
Expect light domain probing (on a labeling team, for instance, the distinction between annotation and labeling) plus a manager-led pitch of the team and roadmap. There is no algorithm content, but it is a real gate. Failing it ends the process, and a failed HM round can also block other Waymo teams' recruiters from advancing you for separate roles.
Recruiter follow-up after this round is often slow (a week or more), so silence here is not necessarily a reject. The 2026 loops also coincide with an active multi-city expansion push, which recruiters reference when describing headcount. A lighter HM behavioral screen can also be decisive: expect a complex-project walkthrough and direct probing on why the project was challenging, with fast no-hire feedback possible after the call.
Waymo interview - frequently asked questions
What questions does Waymo ask in interviews?
Waymo interviews typically span coding and data-structures/algorithms, system design, and behavioral rounds. Karavine has curated Waymo interview practice questions with worked solutions: approach, complexity, and code in C++, Java, and Python.
How many rounds is the Waymo interview?
Waymo's loop usually includes a recruiter or phone screen, one or more technical rounds (coding and/or system design), and a behavioral round. The exact number varies by role and level; Karavine's Waymo prep ladder maps the specific loop, round by round.
How hard is the Waymo interview?
Waymo interviews are competitive and skew medium to hard on coding and system design. With targeted prep on the question types Waymo emphasizes, plus the round structure, they are very beatable.
How do I prepare for a Waymo interview?
Practice Waymo-style questions across the round types Waymo emphasizes, then work through the round-by-round prep ladder for what gets offers. Karavine's Waymo pack bundles the practice questions, worked solutions, online-assessment (OA) tags, difficulty and hotness, and the interview strategy.
What is the Waymo interview process like?
From the recruiter screen to the final loop, Waymo's process rewards candidates who prepare for the rounds it weights most. Karavine's Waymo pack maps the loop and what each round looks for.
What makes Karavine's Waymo questions different?
Every Waymo practice question comes with a worked solution (approach, complexity, and code) and maps to the round types Waymo actually weights, plus OA tags, difficulty, and hotness. They're built for company-specific practice, not generic problem sets.
