Figma interview strategy

Loop Structure & Timeline

Figma's coding phone screen is the gate that decides most loops: pass rates have hovered around 50%, so half the candidates who reach it go no further. That single round, more than anything else in the pipeline, is what generic prep fails to clear.

The overall pipeline runs recruiter screen to phone screen to onsite, with a few extra gates near the end for senior roles.

Phone screen. This is almost always two back-to-back rounds:

  • one 60-minute coding round
  • one 30-45 minute hiring-manager / behavioral chat

The order varies. The coding round is the well-known gate, and with pass rates around 50% it is not a formality. Candidates who clear it usually hear about the onsite within about a week.

Onsite ("VO"). Typically 4-5 rounds: one or two coding / pair-programming rounds, a project deep dive, one or two system-design rounds (or ML system plus ML model design for ML roles), and an all-around / behavioral round, often with the hiring manager. For ML/AI roles the onsite runs long, and five rounds is common.

After the onsite (senior/staff). Strong candidates can face an additional director-level BQ round plus a reference check. That check requires two references, explicitly one manager and one peer, collected before any offer. Leveling and final terms are frequently settled in a separate executive / VP call that is mostly behavioral.

Communication. Recruiters are consistently described as responsive and helpful, and Figma often provides detailed post-onsite feedback through the recruiter, which is rare. The flip side: after a rejection the recruiter typically goes quiet, so do not count on a post-mortem.

Scheduling. Onsite rounds are frequently booked back-to-back with no gaps, and candidates consistently flag fatigue in the later coding rounds as a cause of avoidable mistakes. When the recruiter offers scheduling options, ask for short breaks between rounds.

2026 AI-group variant. Here the first stage combines a hiring-manager project conversation with coding. The onsite then uses five rounds: coding, two system-design rounds, behavioral, and a project deep dive. This five-round block can be spread across three days rather than compressed into one, and in that schedule the decision followed two business days later.

Figma interview - frequently asked questions

What questions does Figma ask in interviews?

Figma interviews typically span coding and data-structures/algorithms, system design, and behavioral rounds. Karavine has curated Figma interview practice questions with worked solutions: approach, complexity, and code in C++, Java, and Python.

How many rounds is the Figma interview?

Figma's loop usually includes a recruiter or phone screen, one or more technical rounds (coding and/or system design), and a behavioral round. The exact number varies by role and level; Karavine's Figma prep ladder maps the specific loop, round by round.

How hard is the Figma interview?

Figma interviews are competitive and skew medium to hard on coding and system design. With targeted prep on the question types Figma emphasizes, plus the round structure, they are very beatable.

How do I prepare for a Figma interview?

Practice Figma-style questions across the round types Figma emphasizes, then work through the round-by-round prep ladder for what gets offers. Karavine's Figma pack bundles the practice questions, worked solutions, online-assessment (OA) tags, difficulty and hotness, and the interview strategy.

What is the Figma interview process like?

From the recruiter screen to the final loop, Figma's process rewards candidates who prepare for the rounds it weights most. Karavine's Figma pack maps the loop and what each round looks for.

What makes Karavine's Figma questions different?

Every Figma practice question comes with a worked solution (approach, complexity, and code) and maps to the round types Figma actually weights, plus OA tags, difficulty, and hotness. They're built for company-specific practice, not generic problem sets.
