Loop Structure & Timeline
Bloomberg's SDE loop is one of the more standardized in the industry, especially for new-grad hires. That predictability is the opportunity: because nearly every candidate walks the same five-step pipeline, you can prepare for exactly what's coming rather than guessing.
- Recruiter / HR phone screen - 20-30 minutes. Behavioral only: a resume walk-through, why-Bloomberg, plus visa and timeline. Decisions arrive within a day or two.
- Technical phone screen - 45-60 minutes. Roughly 10-15 minutes of project and behavioral chat, then two coding problems. Both problems must be reachable in the slot, and running out of time on the second is a common failure mode.
- Super Day onsite - three back-to-back technical rounds plus an HR conversation, usually all in one afternoon. Each technical round runs 45-60 minutes with two interviewers, two coding problems, and 10-15 minutes of resume and behavioral talk up front. - EM / hiring manager round - 45-60 minutes with the manager whose team is sponsoring the headcount. Most candidates describe it as a resume deep-dive plus behavioral; system design only appears when the role is mid-senior. A non-trivial fraction of these rounds slip in a surprise hard coding problem, so going in cold on data structures after a long behavioral stretch is risky.
- Offer call - usually within a week of the EM round, with the written offer following shortly after.
Tokyo and Dublin loops follow the same format but are slower to schedule and feature mixed-region interviewer panels (for example, a Hong Kong shadow plus a Tokyo team lead). End to end, expect roughly 4-8 weeks from recruiter outreach to offer for new-grad, and longer for senior in-office roles.
For experienced-hire team loops, candidates interviewing with specific teams repeat the later rounds once per team. Each team's second round pairs one hour of coding (two mediums at a standard pace) with one hour of system design, so being in process with two teams means going through that pair twice. At this stage, the system-design hour carries most of the differentiation.
